Industry code and consumer feedback key to maintaining standards and safety for motorists
Motor Codes, the automotive industry self-regulatory body, welcomes today’s announcement that the current vehicle MOT testing regime is to remain unchanged and that a greater emphasis is to be placed on consumer confidence.
In response to the Department for Transport’s (DfT) announcement, Motor Codes Managing Director, Chris Mason, acknowledges the government’s call for the need to improve consistency of service and quality for consumers, through the expansion of the industry code of practice to encompass MOT testing:
“Retaining a regular MOT test provides a safety net for motorists, ensuring that vehicles are maintained to roadworthy standards but focusing on the customer experience is equally important. Forging closer ties between MOT test centre accreditation and Motor Codes, with the clear commitments made by garages that sign up to its OFT-approved set of guidelines, will serve to raise standards and increase confidence amongst motorists.”
Reflecting the government’s call for motorists to be able to rate their garage experience, Motor Codes has in place an online review system, allowing customers of subscribing garages to leave feedback visible for other motorists to see. Comments are gathered through surveys completed by customers of Motor Codes garages and, already, in the region of 20,000 motorists per year comment on the level of customer service received. This allows motorists to make an informed choice about where to trust their car.
Standards at Motor Codes garages – over 6,500 nationwide – are monitored through regular RAC inspections and garage conduct is overseen by an independent compliance panel, currently chaired by Trading Standards Institute Chief Executive, Ron Gainsford OBE.
The MOT test plays a crucial role in maintaining the standards of vehicles on UK roads. Currently in the UK, new cars complete an MOT test three years after purchase and annually thereafter. Last year there was an 8% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on UK roads and, thanks to stringent vehicle testing, the UK has some of the safest roads in Europe.
