Though summer is behind us there’s still time to escape the bustle of every day life and savour a long drive through one of the UK’s countless beautiful roads. We’ve pulled together our five favourite roads for a weekend road trip below:

Cheddar Gorge

1. Cheddar Gorge – Somerset, England

Located 10 miles south-west of Bristol, deep in the heart of the West Country, Cheddar Gorge one of the most awe inspiring drives in Britain thanks to its deep-sliced limestone cliffs. Expect twisting turns and the odd farm vehicle as you weave your way through this spectacular route.

Snake Pass

2. Snake Pass – Peak District, England

Located in the Derbyshire section of the Peak District,  Snake Pass crosses the Pennines and Ladybower Reservoir. Expect tight corners and twisting tarmac to challenge you as you tackle the route. Though not for the faint of heart, the magnificent views of the National Trust’s High Peak Estate are the perfect reward.

3. Penrith to Haydon Bridge – Cumbria and Northumberland, England

The ‘roof of England’ passes from Penrith in Cumbria to Haydon Bridge in Northumberland. The sharp turns are popular with both drivers and motorcyclists alike and the dramatic scenery makes for the perfect photo opportunity.

4. Black Mountain Pass – Brecon Beacons, Wales

Black Mountain Pass (also known as the A4069) connects Llandovery with Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen and runs across Black Mountain in the Brecon Beacons. With unparallelled views and plenty of hairpin bends, it’s a road you’ll want to drive again and again.

5. Abergwesyn Pass – Powys, Wales

The trickiest route to both drive and pronounce, Abergwesyn Pass is a smorgasbord of straights, hairpin bends, crests, bridges ascents and descents which will test all your skills. With a stunning backdrop of mountains, forests and quaint villages, this is the perfect driving escape.
